On Why Rubbish Is More Than Just Bad Manners

Greece is a beautiful country filled with vast sandy, warm beaches stretching as far as the eye can see. The majority of the country consists of gorgeous Mediterranean Islands, making the country a spectacular tourist destination. Or at least it used to be. In recent times the people of Greece have been far more than negligent with some litter on the street, it has become disgusting and literally repulsive to tourists. It seems the Greek councils have given up on try to prevent litter and instead rely on the morning vacuum tanker to clean up the mess.

Tourists such as my grandparents, who used to love the tourist destination. They would love the peaceful atmosphere and gentle climate, and then quickly have their attention be drawn towards piles of litter and dirt– a disturbing display. How could any tourist relax in what seems to be the personal landfill of the residents of a country? Every corner and every street is covered in candy wrappers, beer bottles, plastic bottles, newspapers, magazines and other things which had clearly been deteriorating for some time. The lack of respect for tidiness is more than simply littering, it conveys a general laziness and lack of national pride. This is the kind of display that has my grandparents suggest to all their friends never to travel to Greece, they tell their children and grandchildren, who tell their friends and family and thus a viral cycle of tourist repulsion has decayed one of the largest industries Greece has today, tourism. Today Greece is riddled with crime and decadence, filth and rubbish and it is a vicious cycle which decreases tourism and thus the Greek economy and leads to more filthiness in the street. Litter destroyed Greek tourism.
